India Bradley shimmers onstage. Her long legs and smile draw the eye, even when she dances among the large corps of New York City Ballet. Fortunately for New York’s audiences, Bradley also has a range of soloist work in a variety of styles. Her repertoire includes almost all soloist roles in “George Balanchine’s Nutcracker”, including the principal role of Dewdrop in the Waltz of the Flowers. Dewdrop is a role in which Bradley was the first African American woman to perform in the company's 75 years, a role that showcases her grand jete and glamorous presence. As one of a few women of color in the company, Bradley is setting an example of determination (and beautiful dancing, of course), for all dancers, and paving the way for younger dancers of color with exciting careers in the making, including Olivia Bell and Mia Williams.
In addition to more classic roles like a Princess in Peter Martins’ “Swan Lake” and the Pas de Trios in Balanchine’s “Agon”, Bradley also has a healthy range of roles in the contemporary canon. She’s worked with choreographers Justin Peck, Gianna Reisin, and Tiler Peck among others. This past season, Bradley also debuted in the dramatic principal role in La Valse.
Outside of City Ballet, Bradley has performed in roles such as Balanchine’s “Who Cares?” at the Vail Dance Festival. Last year, she debuted in the “Rubies” pas de deux and as Calliope in “Apollo”. This year, she will debut in Tersiphore, the lead female role in “Apollo”, when she returns. Additionally, she is a model who has worked with Artizia, Coach, and Victoria’s Secret, and appeared in publications such as Vogue.
Bradley trained in Michigan, at the Dance Theatre of Harlem school and at the School of American Ballet.
